Marcelinho double leads Stallions riot in Kolkata

A thoroughly professional performance by FC Pune City orchestrated by Marcelinho Leite brace ensured that FC Pune City grabbed their first points of the Indian Super League season 4.

The game began in cagey fashion with both sides looking to find their rhythm. The tempo of the game was set with a couple of attempts on target by both sides but their respective defenses were astute. The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute when a mistake by ATK’s defense allowed Emiliano Alfaro to sprint at goal on the counter and set up Marcelinho Leite who burried it past Debjit Majumder. The game picked up momentum for the next fifteen minutes or so but at the end of the first half it remained 0-1 in the away side’s favor.

The second half picked up where it left off with both sides pushing on the accelerator from the word go. It required a moment of magic however from ATK to put off Pune’s defense that looked strong on the night and that came from a Bipin Singh free-kick that left Kamaljit Singh with no chance at all. Minutes later, it was young midfielder Pawan Kumar who restored the lead for the away side with a textbook header that rattled the back of the net. The crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium were stunned into silence as Pune scored their third of the night with captain Marcelinho Leite scoring his second goal at the end of a well constructed move.

The icing on the cake was a counter attack by Marcelinho and Emiliano Alfaro wherein it was the Brazilian who carried the ball all the way this time and left to the Uruguayan to give the move its finishing touches. At the blow of the referee’s final whistle, the scoreline read 1-4 in favor of the visitors with goals coming from Marcelinho, Rohit Kumar and Emiliano Alfaro.  The Stallions will now take on their local rivals, Mumbai City FC, on November 28.
